ARCHIVED - Spain sells surplus Pfizer vaccines to New Zealand and Fiji
The Minister of Health has indicated that Spain will donate coronavirus vaccines to African countries with low vaccination rates
The Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, reported on Wednesday September 22 that Spain has sold thousands of Pfizer coronavirus vaccines to New Zealand and Fiji at cost price from this country’s surplus supply. There are currently about seven million refrigerated doses throughout the autonomous communities, so the Ministry has paused weekly shipments in order to utilise what it is storage.
Ms Darias confirmed that 250,000 doses of the Pfizer jab were sold to New Zealand at the same price that Spain acquired them, while some seven million vaccines have already been donated to countries whose vaccination rates are slower, particularly Latin America.
The Spanish government had previously committed to supplying 7.5 million jabs to these nations, and the minister has reiterated her intention of donating more doses to African countries, where just over 3% of the population have been fully immunised against Covid.
While the vaccination campaign in Spain has slowed down during August and September, 75.9% of people have now had both jabs.
