ARCHIVED - Spain set for a white weekend as storm Arwen arrives
Eleven communities in Spain have been put on alert for snow and storms
As Spain recovers from the heavy flooding and frigid temperatures brought by polar air mass which followed the arrival of the first DANA of the winter season, storm Arwen is set to blanket much of the country in snow over the weekend.
Aemet has issued a special warning on Thursday November 25 for the snowfall episode that will leave white landscapes and low temperatures across the country until at least Sunday.
The new cold front will penetrate the Cantabrian coast, travelling from north to south, and adding to the persistent rainfall that is expected in the northern half of Spain. In much of the southern half of the country, the maximum temperatures will not exceed 10 degrees Celsius.
The weather will remain relatively stable on Friday before the full effects of Arwen are felt on Saturday, when Aemet spokesperson Rubén del Campo predicts that intense north-westerly winds “will drag an arctic air mass from very high and very cold latitudes".
The expert forecasts that Spain will be intensely cold throughout the weekend, with strong and persistent frosts affecting many inland areas. In a good portion of northern and central Spain, the maximum day-time temperatures will hardly reach eight degrees, while high mountainous areas could drop as low as zero.
Eleven communities under weather alerts
A combination of snow, rain, strong winds and costal storms have resulted in 11 communities being put on alert on Friday, with both the Canary Islands and Catalonia on orange weather warnings.
Aragon and the Valencian Community have activated a yellow alert for strong winds of between 70 and 80 kilometres per hour, while in Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, Navarra and La Rioja there is a yellow warning for intense snowfall.
