ARCHIVED - Spain sneaks into top 10 of best European roads to drive
Spain scored high in affordability of fuel and the general condition of the road network

With more cars on the road then ever, it’s important for motorists to know that their journey is going to be affordable, comfortable and, most important of all, safe. To this end, the International Association of Drivers has studied the traffic conditions in 33 countries and ranked the best places in Europe to drive.
Spain hasn’t quite managed to nab the top spot, which this year goes to Switzerland. This country scored an impressive 100 points and won out on factors like the fluidity of traffic flow and road safety.
Several different aspects of the travel experience were taken into account including how congested the roads are, the price of fuel and the quality of the roads themselves. According to these parameters, the top five of the best countries to drive in list is closed by the Netherlands (97.99 points), Belgium (83.56), Denmark (79.11) and Germany (78.4).

Spain took the pretty respectable place of 7th on the list, noted for the fact that there are only 627 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, a relatively low number of victims of traffic accidents and a “good quality” road network. In addition, Spain has the third lowest fuel prices, beaten only by Cyprus (1.47 euros per litre) and France (1.58 euros per litre) and Austria (1.73 euros per litre).
Bringing in the second half of the top ten countries to drive in, therefore, are Sweden, in sixth position with 77.6 points, Spain in seventh place (76.36), Cyprus (76.07), Austria (74.77) and France (74.58).
