Spain to begin providing glasses and contact lenses through the public health service
The country will also review its position on the restrictions surrounding therapeutical cannabis
It has been announced by Spanish Health Minister Mónica García that graded lenses for glasses and contact lenses will both be included in the country’s Social Security benefits.
The aim of this measure is to protect the Spanish National Health System, she said, although few specific details are known at the moment, such as how much each person could have their glasses subsidised or how many people look to benefit from the system.
With this measure, García announced, “people will not have to dip into their pockets when they need a benefit”.
This will be carried out “over the course of the legislature”, so within the next four years.
“We will tackle it decisively, together with the Ministry of Social Rights and Consumer Affairs,” she stressed.
In reality, this is not a new initiative. It was already proposed during the last legislature, although in the end it didn’t get pushed through parliament.
Last October, along the same lines, the Council of Ministers augmented the Oral Health Plan by 68 million euros, increasing the number of beneficiaries by including children between the ages of 0 and 5, as well as people diagnosed with certain types of cancer.
In the same announcement, the minister also explained that Spain would make changes to the regulation of therapeutical cannabis over “the coming months”.
“Spain cannot remain on the sidelines of international advances in this field, and it is therefore imperative to address this issue with scientific rigour, ethical responsibility and social sensitivity,” she said.
