ARCHIVED - Spain tops poll as best value holiday destination for Brits
Mainland Spain gives UK tourists the most bang for their buck, followed closely by the Canary Islands
We’re all feeling the pinch at the moment with rising inflation and seemingly out-of-control electricity and fuel costs, but it’s hard to resist a well-earned holiday in the sun after the hard slog of the past two years. For this very reason, Post Office Travel Money has sought out the very best value destinations for British tourists, and Spain has come out on top.
More than 2,000 people were surveyed about their previous holidays, and resorts in mainland Spain were given an impressive 92% value rating by past visitors.
It comes as little surprise, then, that sun-seeking Brits are expected to fork out more than 10 billion pounds on Spanish holidays in 2022.
Hot on its heels was the Canary Islands, with 91%, followed by Greece with 89% and Turkey and Portugal in joint fourth place at 88%. When it comes to long-haul destinations, Mexico offers the most bang for your pound, with a value rating of 85%.
Bulgaria has long been considered a bargain destination for Brits, offering great value for money in bars and restaurants and on public transport. It’s surprising, therefore, that recent visitors only gave it 80%, relegating it to twelfth place.
On the other end of the scale, the worst value rating was allocated to Scandinavia (42%), followed by Dubai (44%) and Vietnam (59%).
Nick Boden, head of Post Office Travel, said: “Sterling’s fall in value makes it even more important for people planning trips to consider the costs they will face in resorts abroad before they take the plunge and book a holiday.
“While they weigh up the cost of flights and accommodate or package deals, they will need to watch what is happening with sterling as that will make a sizeable difference to the overall cost of their holiday.”
Despite rising costs and fluctuations in the value of the pound, the survey revealed that a whopping 53% of Brits who have been abroad in the last 5 years are planning a foreign holiday again this year, compared with just 43% in 2021.
