Spain transport strike called off after agreement reached between unions and employers
Details of the agreement will be announced this Friday
The employers’ associations and the unions of the transport section have reached an agreement this Thursday October 25 to call off the general strike by the workers that was to begin on Monday 28.
The unions had originally called for strikes to take place over several days in October, November and December. The strikes were to come from transport professionals in the freight sector, both those who drive heavy trucks and smaller ones such as vans, including those that deliver orders to homes, potentially causing disruption to Black Friday and Christmas shopping deliveries.
In addition, road transport professionals working in vehicles with more than nine seats, i.e. buses and minibuses, as well as drivers of publicly owned urban public transport and those in the health sector, such as ambulances, were also called to mobilise.
“Tonight at the headquarters of the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA), the Spanish Confederation of Freight Transport (CETM) has reached an agreement with the unions, CCOO and UGT, which means the cancellation of the strike of professional drivers that was to begin next Monday, October 28,” said a CETM source.
The details of the agreement reached will be announced this Friday, CETM added. Both employers’ associations and unions met on Thursday at the SIMA headquarters to agree on a plan regarding early retirement for the sector.
