ARCHIVED - Spain vaccine update September 15: over 75 per cent of the population double jabbed
The Ministry of Health in Spain intends to make a decision this week about who should receive a booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine
As the fifth wave of the coronavirus pandemic begins to subside, Spain has reached another milestone and has now fully vaccinated 75% of the population, some 35,571,661 people. In addition, 37,303,202 people, or 78.6% have received at least one dose.
Covid experts are set to meet on Thursday September 16 and make a final decision on whether to administer a third booster dose of the vaccine to certain groups, but the common consensus is that a top-up jab will be made available from October to older people living in care homes, in addition to those with the most compromised immune systems, such as people with cystic fibrosis or individuals undergoing chemotherapy.
To date, 100% of people over the age of 80 have been fully vaccinated as they were given priority at the beginning of the campaign. Nevertheless, the vast majority of Covid-related fatalities during this wave of the pandemic have been in the older age groups, despite the fact that those aged between 12 and 19 continue to have the highest cumulative incidence rate.
As the Spanish government pushes ahead with the campaign to vaccinate youngsters, 62.8% of the 12 to 19 population have now been double jabbed, with Asturias leading the race (74.8%), closely followed by Navarra (70.1%) and the Region of Murcia (69.1%).
