Spain weather forecast Aug 3-6: Temperatures climb back towards 40°C this week
Thunderstorms will interrupt the sunshine in northern Spain before the heat intensifies again
Weather outlook on Thursday August 6
Spain is heading into a typically hot August week, although the intense heatwave that dominated the end of July is beginning to ease in some parts of the country. Northern Spain will see the biggest contrast, with cooler air bringing showers and thunderstorms, while much of the south and inland areas remain firmly in the grip of summer with temperatures climbing back into the high 30s.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the unsettled weather in the north won't last long before hotter conditions become more widespread again later in the week.
Monday August 3
The week begins with a split in the weather. Northern Spain, particularly around the Cantabrian coast and the Pyrenees, can expect cloud, scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be heavy. Elsewhere it's a much brighter picture with plenty of sunshine across central, southern and eastern Spain.
Afternoon temperatures will generally reach 30 to 34°C across much of the Mediterranean coast, 34 to 37°C in central Spain and 38 to 40°C in parts of Andalucía, Extremadura and the Guadalquivir Valley. Coastal areas will feel a little more comfortable thanks to sea breezes.
Some yellow weather warnings remain in force for parts of northern Spain because of thunderstorms and locally heavy rain during the afternoon.
Tuesday August 4
Any showers become increasingly confined to the far north as high pressure strengthens across the country. Sunshine will dominate for most regions, with only isolated afternoon storms possible over mountainous areas.
Temperatures edge upwards again, with highs of 35 to 38°C across much of inland Spain and 39 to 40°C possible in the hottest parts of the south-west. Mediterranean resorts are likely to remain between 30 and 34°C.
Heat warnings are expected across parts of southern and inland Spain as daytime temperatures climb once again.
Wednesday August 5
Wednesday looks set to be one of the hottest days of the week. Widespread sunshine is forecast across almost the entire country, although isolated thunderstorms could still bubble up over the Pyrenees later in the day.
Many inland areas will reach 36 to 39°C, with some parts of Andalucía and the Guadalquivir Valley flirting with 40°C. Overnight temperatures will also remain high in many cities, making for another uncomfortable night in the south.
Heat warnings are likely to cover several inland provinces as the hot air intensifies again.
Thursday August 6
The hot spell continues into Thursday with little change across most of Spain. Sunshine will be widespread from morning until evening, although the far north may still see a few isolated showers over higher ground.
Maximum temperatures will remain around 36 to 39°C across central and southern Spain, with 40°C again possible in the hottest inland locations. Along the Mediterranean coast, highs of 31 to 34°C are expected, although the humidity will actually make it feel warmer.
