Spain weather forecast May 25-28: Fresh storms arrive in time for the weekend
After a brief reprieve on Thursday, torrential rain will set in across Spain for the next few days
The DANA that hit Spain a few days ago with torrential rains and electrical storms, especially in the east and southeast of the country, has already begun to lose strength mid-week, but the unsettled weather will return with a vengeance just in time for the weekend with the arrival of yet another DANA.
Over the next three or four days, low pressure accompanied by cold air at high levels will bring heavy showers to much of the country, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), whose spokesperson Ruben del Campo predicts that the temperatures will also be between 5 and 10ºC lower than normal for this time of year in the south and east. On the other hand, the mercury will gradually rise in northern Spain.
After several miserable days, Thursday May 25 will begin relatively bright and sunny in large parts of the south but the cloudiness will increase as the day goes on, resulting in widespread showers and storms from noon in eastern and inland Spain.
In Aragón, Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, these showers could be strong and accompanied by hail. At the end of the day, there could also be locally intense showers in Galicia, Asturias and western Castilla y León.
Daytime temperatures will vary widely, with the thermometers topping out at 30ºC in the likes of Orense and Pontevedra but barely hitting 22ºC in Alicante.
- Yellow weather warning for rain and storms: Andalucía, Aragón, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Galicia, Madrid, Region of Murcia.
- Orange weather warning for rain and storms: Valencian Community.
On Friday May 26, del Campo anticipates that the stormy weather will sweep from east to west, resulting in showers across the board, more persistent inland, particularly in Madrid, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Extremadura.
It will be cloudy overall, and rain is also likely on the Cantabrian and Mediterranean coasts and in the Balearic Islands.
Daytime temperatures will increase in the south and northwest, hitting a pleasant 25ºC in Seville.
- Yellow weather warning for rain and storms: Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Galicia and Madrid.
- Orange weather warning for rain and storms: Valencian Community.
A front located to the west of Portugal will produce overcast skies and almost generalised showers and storms across Spain on Saturday May 27. The rain will intensify throughout the day in large parts of the south and in Galicia and the Cantabrian mountain range.
There’s also a slight possibility of scattered showers on the northern coast of Spain and in coastal areas of Murcia, and while the Mediterranean will remain dry it will be mostly overcast.
The mercury will take a nosedive in southern Spain while rising in the rest of the country.
There are currently no weather alerts in place for Saturday.
Heading into Sunday May 28, the progress of the DANA is a little more difficult to predict, but Aemet expects the instability to continue, with most of Spain and the islands in for more cloudy skies and showers. These rains could be more intense and frequent in the south of the Valencian Community, Murcia, Ibiza, Mallorca and southern Galicia.
As the afternoon goes on, heavy rain is also expected in northern Andalucía.
Daytime temperatures will drop in most of the country and in the Balearic Islands, although slight rises are forecast in the extreme south.
No weather warnings have yet been issued for Sunday.
