ARCHIVED - Spain welcomes summer temperatures of up to 33 degrees: weather outlook May 6-8
Experts predict the good weather will last throughout May, with a possible heatwave in Spain in June
After an exceptionally unsettled week where many provinces experienced clear skies and sunny spells while others recorded record amounts of rainfall, Thursday May 5 marked the beginning of a dramatic change, with clouds dispersing and the mercury on the rise.
The good news is that meteorologists are forecasting more good weather for the weekend ahead and indeed, for the rest of the month.
"The sun will be seen in much of Spain and temperatures will begin to rise from today, especially in the west with spring temperatures of the order of 20ºC or more," Francisco Martín, meteorologist at Meteored, explained, while confirming that the DANA which caused so much instability earlier in the week is rapidly moving east.
Friday May 6
Friday will dawn with bright and clear skies throughout much of Spain, with the exception of the mountainous areas of Cantabria, the Pyrenees and the Levante coast, where some clouds will hang around for a while longer.
Daytime temperatures will rise throughout the country, except on the southeast coast where there will be few changes or even slight decreases.
A generally pleasant day overall though, with Murcia set to tip the scales at a maximum of 25ºC while Sevilla could reach a sweltering 29ºC. A slightly cooler start to the weekend in Alicante, with highs of 20ºC rising to a maximum of 27ºC in parts.
Saturday May 7
“During the weekend, it is very possible that 30-33ºC will be exceeded in the Guadiana and Guadalquivir basins, also in the interior of Galicia, and that they will rise somewhat more in the big cities due to the urban island heat effect,” Mr Martín has indicated.
The urban island heat effect occurs because of the sun hitting the asphalt and buildings in built-up areas, which could raise the thermometers 1-2 degrees higher than in more rural settings.
Sunday May 8
There is little change expected on Sunday which will remain stable and sunny. However, the temperatures will now begin to shoot up in inland Spain, with records of 25 or 26ºC predicted in cities like Madrid, Zaragoza and Valladolid.
Areas in the southwest of the country will easily exceed 30ºC.
The rest of May
The new burst of good weather is expected “both for the remainder of May and also for the month of June,” meteorologist Jose Miguel Vinas explained.
"The monthly maps of anomalies predict temperatures above average for both months in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with more prominent warm anomalies in June, which suggests a possible heat wave. Rainfall will be markedly lower than average”.
