ARCHIVED - Spain will maintain the recommended time interval between first and second Covid vaccine doses
The gap between jabs remains at 21 days for Pfizer and 28 days for Moderna
Spain’s Ministry of Health decided on Tuesday against extending the interval between doses of the Pfizer and Moderna coronavirus vaccines to 56 days, despite it having been widely reported prior to the meeting of the Public Health Committee that the move was likely to meet with approval.
Various regional health authorities including those in Andalucía, Catalunya and Madrid had requested the widening of the gap between jabs to between 42 and 56 days in order to try and vaccinate a greater number of people and give some level of immunity to a wider segement of the population, but Carolina Darias, the Minister for Health, announced that the proposal had been discarded during an appearance in the Senate. Her decision came a day after the European Medicines Agency opposed the widening of the interval between jabs, stating that the vaccines must be used as recommended in the manufacturers’ prospectuses, i.e. with intervals of 21 days for the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and 28 days for the Moderna product.
