ARCHIVED - Spain approves series of new measures to reduce energy consumption
The Energy Contingency Plan should save consumers money this autumn-winter in Spain
The Council of Ministers in Spain has finally approved its new Energy Contingency Plan with no fewer than 73 additional measures that should save households and businesses some money this winter. Overall, the plan of the government is to cut natural gas use by between 5.1% and 13.5% and to implement new protection for households, particularly the more vulnerable families.
The crucial point is that the Ministry has remained true to its word and will not impose any kind of limitations on the use of energy in private homes. However, one change involves a so called ‘comparative’ electricity bill, whereby customers will be given a list of tips on saving energy on the back of their bill, as well as comparing their usage with neighbours who have the same post code.
Here are some of the key measures in the Energy Contingency Plan:
Thermal and electricity bonus
In order to "protect the most vulnerable," the Spanish government will extend these bonus schemes so that they reach the largest number of households possible.
Community boilers
The 1.6 million households that use community boilers will receive a significant discount to their bill. These premises don’t currently benefit from the natural gas TUR and the government is still trying to work out how exactly it’s going to implement this change.
Solar panels and self-consumption
The government will continue promoting self-consumption with an additional 500 million euros in aid to the already approved 900 million euros. More fiscal aid has also been included to encourage investment by households in energy transition.
Electricity bill: what happens in your neighbourhood?
The average electricity consumption of neighbouring households and businesses will now be included on electricity bills, as well as measures owners can employ to save energy. Some of these tips are:
- Shutdown of shop windows at night.
- Limitation of heating during winter months to a maximum of 19ºC.
- Keep the door of the premises closed when the air conditioning or heating is working
