ARCHIVED - Spain avoids clarifying if additional measures will be imposed on European travellers
Christmas hangs in the balance as Spain is yet to decide if European passengers will require Covid tests
Amid growing fears about the spread of the Omicron coronavirus variant, Spain’s Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, has appealed to the EU on Tuesday December 7 for a common consensus about coronavirus restrictions as Christmas fast approaches.
Known for keeping her cards close to her chest, Ms Darias didn’t hint at whether Spain is in favour of requiring a negative Covid test or imposing other measures on vaccinated Europeans travelling to this country, as our neighbours in Portugal have done.
According to the Minister, "any action at the European level has to be coordinated within the EU. Spain will be up to whatever decision is made within the EU".
The Spanish government has already implemented a number of controls, such as requiring proof of vaccination from UK travellers, in an attempt to stem the spread of the new variant.
The measure has particularly affected families of teenagers travelling to Spain from Britain, as all those over the age of 12 must produce a Covid passport in order to gain entry, resulting in spoiled Christmas plans for many.
