ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update September 14: 155 deaths reported in last 24 hours
The coronavirus death toll in Spain is the highest it’s been in almost two weeks
While the cumulative incidence rate, daily infections and hospital admissions have all been in steady decline over the past few weeks, the Covid-related death toll is sadly not following suit and fatalities remain high, particularly among the older age group. While more than 35 million people in Spain are now fully vaccinated, including 100 per cent of those over 80 years, just 60.3 per cent of those aged between 12 and 19 – the group responsible for the majority of the fifth wave infections – have been double jabbed.
Cumulative incidence rate
Arguably the best indicator of the evolution of the coronavirus pandemic, the 14-day cumulative incidence rate has fallen by more than 50 points in just one week. The figure now stands at 109.38 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to the data released by the Ministry of Health on Tuesday September 14. Spain needs to reach 50 cases for the WHO to consider the pandemic under control, but the indicators are positive as only the north African enclave of Melilla remains at ‘extreme risk’ with 291.70 cases.
The cumulative incidence rate is steadily declining throughout all age groups eligible for vaccinations, with the 12 to 19 population still registering the highest figure at 140 cases. The data on Tuesday show that those under the age of 11 are reporting a cumulative incidence of 143.11, but of course, these youngsters are currently not being inoculated against Covid.
Covid infections
The Ministry reported 3,261 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, of which 1,715 were diagnosed in the last 24 hours, down from 2,311 on the same day last week. This brings the total number of people infected with Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic to 4,918,526.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 4,459 patients admitted for Covid-19 throughout Spain, and 1,136 are registered in the ICU, while 631 people have been discharged in the last 24 hours.
With these figures, it is clear that hospital pressure has been gradually easing over the last seven days, with coronavirus patients now occupying just 3.7 per cent of hospital beds and 12.41 per cent of ICU beds. This is a decrease of more than 2 per cent in the case of intensive care in a week.
The number of Covid deaths has reached a number not seen since September 3, with a further 155 fatalities reported on Tuesday. This brings the total death toll in Spain to 85,548 people.
Vaccinations
A total of 35,413,078 people or 74.6 per cent of the population have now been fully vaccinated in Spain against coronavirus, while 78.5 per cent, or 37,243,220 people, have received at least one dose.
