ARCHIVED - Spain reaches vaccination goal of 5 million immunised in first week of May
Spain has reached its second vaccination goal of 5 million people fully innoculated in the first week of May.
The latest data from Spain’s Ministry of Health confirmed that a total of 17,130,598 doses of Covid vaccines have now been administered, with 5,098,903 people having received both doses.
The figures mean that 10.7 per cent of Spain’s population is now fully vaccinated, while 12,162,359 people, 25.6 per cent of Spain’s population, have received at least one dose.
Health Minister Carolina Darias broke down Spain’s vaccination figures by age group, confirming that 72 per cent of those aged over 60 have now received at least one dose while 80 per cent of those aged between 70 and 79 have also received at least one jab.
The Ministry of Health also confirmed 16,353 new cases and 77 deaths over last weekend in Spain, and the country’s incidence rate has fallen slightly to 223 cases per 100,000.
In April, President Pedro Sanchez had set the target of 5 million people being fully vaccinated by the first week of May, with the next target being 10 million fully vaccinated by the first week of June, 15 million by June 14, and 25 million by July 19.
The head of the Spanish government said he hoped that around 33 million people living in Spain would be fully vaccinated by the end of August, reaching 70 per cent immunity within the population.
