ARCHIVED - Spanish airport relaxes restrictions on liquids and electronics in hand luggage
Passengers travelling through Palma de Mallorca security will no longer have to remove liquids from their bags
Airport bosses on the Spanish island of Mallorca have announced that passengers will no longer have to remove their liquids or any electronic devices from their hand luggage when passing through security.
State-of-art-technology is being installed as part of a four-year renovation project at Son Sant Joan airport that will allow security personnel a crystal clear, 3D view of everything in a passenger’s bag, making it unnecessary to separate these items.
"The security filters will be equipped with more modern technology, thus achieving positive aspects in terms of security and quality, such as passengers not having to remove liquids or computers," the airport’s director, Tomás Melgar, explained.
The news comes just days after several airports in the UK revealed that they too are trialling the 3D scanners with the aim of easing off on the liquid rules by 2024. John Holland-Kaye, Heathrow airport's top manager, confirmed that the new equipment is being phased in while testing for effectiveness. They are currently being used in Terminal 3.
Back in Spain, an investment of close to 560 million euros has been earmarked for the redevelopment of Mallorca’s airport, which hasn’t been substantially updated “for more than 25 years.”
The works will be carried out during the next four winters when the airport traditionally sees less traffic, thus keeping disruption to a minimum.
"The time has come to carry out a comprehensive reform of our facilities," Melgar continued. "It is very important for us to minimize as much as possible the effect that this may have on both passengers and the companies that provide services at the airport."
