Spanish airport worker hospitalised after drinking vending machine coffee full of bugs
The young woman dispensed the insect-laden coffee from a public machine in Palma de Mallorca Airport
Next time you go to grab a quick cuppa before boarding a plane, you might want to think again after a truly horrifying incident in Palma de Mallorca Airport this week.
A 21-year-old airline employee was rushed to intensive care on Tuesday April 23 after drinking a coffee from a vending machine in the terminal, which is open to the public, that was swimming with unidentified insects. Unfortunately, the young woman had already taken two sips of the beverage before she noticed the floating bugs.
She immediately began to feel sick and other airport staff said she displayed symptoms similar to someone who has ingested poison – her lips and eyes swelled up and she was having difficulty breathing.
The woman was taken to the airport medial clinic but as her condition continued to worsen, the decision was made to call an ambulance and she was hurried away to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Sol Llàtzer hospital.
On the way, paramedics had to administer adrenaline to the young employee, who was suffering an anaphylactic attack. She was kept in intensive care overnight under observation and is understood to be recovering well. However, the woman has made it clear that she will be seeking legal advice once she is discharged.
Needless to say, the vending machine that discharged the insect contaminated coffee has been shut down and technicians have been called in to try and figure out how such a horrific incident could have occurred. The company that supplies the machines has also been told to review all of the equipment in the terminal for similar issues.
In the meantime, Palma Airport plans to open a full investigation in order to prevent a similar event in the future.
