Spanish baggage handler strikes: check if your flight has been affected
The Iberia January strikes will impact more than 400 flights at 29 airports across Spain
Days of deliberations have sadly come to nothing and Iberia ground staff are going ahead with their planned strike this January. Without baggage management workers, aircraft assistance or passenger services, the airline has had no option but to cancel a total of 444 flights operated by Iberia itself, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum.
Employees will down tools between Friday January 5 and Monday January 8. Any affected passengers can request an alternative flight or a refund.
The majority of long-haul flights will remain operational, while half of domestic (51%) and European (49%) flights will be suspended.
While ground staff are protesting at 29 different airports across Spain, at the moment the vast majority of flights affected are those travelling to or from Madrid. Iberia has now published a full list of cancelled flights, which you can find here.
What to do if your flight is cancelled
First, and most importantly, check your flight status on either the Iberia or Aena website before setting off for the airport. However, the airline has warned that some flights which appear to be going ahead as planned could be axed at the last minute.
If you find that your flight has been cancelled, Spain’s Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) advises that "any compensation must be requested in writing, directly to the airline, through its website or at the airport counter, leaving a record of the circumstances and the date, or through the travel agency or the platform through which the service was paid."
In this sense, it is essential to keep all the information related to the cancellation of the flight, such as your boarding pass, the ticket or the possible expenses incurred by the cancellation (meals, accommodation...). It is also advisable to request a cancellation certificate from the airline.
