Spanish branch of UK neo-Nazi group Combat 18 taken down
Police have arrested 16 members of the far-right militant group in Spain
The Spanish branch of the neo-Nazi group Combat 18, an organisation which was founded in the UK, has been broken up and many leaders arrested this Tuesday October 17 in a large police operation spanning Catalonia, Madrid, Toledo, Lugo and Malaga.
During the 14 separate search and arrest operations that took place simultaneously across the country, police seized various items, including promotional material for Combat 18, xenophobic and racist propaganda, bladed weapons and drugs.
According to investigators, the main activity of the group has focused on “holding multiple organisational meetings, continuous recruitment of militants, merchandising and fundraising tasks to finance the group”. They have also detected an “attempt to supply firearms, planning future violent actions against people and property”.
Combat 18 was founded in the UK in 1992 and then spread to other parts of Europe and even the US and Latin America. The organisation is characterised by its xenophobic ideas, violence against immigrants, ethnic minorities and the LGTBI community. Combat 18 takes its name from the first and eighth letters of the alphabet (A for Adolf and H for Hitler).
They are considered to be the “armed wing” of the ultra-right-wing organisation ‘Blood and Honour’. They have a presence in several countries and are committed to clandestine armed struggle to achieve their political aims. Canada even considers them to be a terrorist organisation.
In this week’s police operation, a total of 16 people – 13 men and three women – have been arrested for allegedly belonging to this international criminal organisation. The investigation into the case is still open and further arrests have not been ruled out. The detainees will be brought before the courts in the coming days.
