ARCHIVED - Spanish chef crowned the Best in the World
Spain won the most prizes in the Top 100 gastronomy awards
At a lavish awards ceremony held in Madrid On Tuesday September 20, DiverXO chef Dabiz Muñoz swept the boards, winning the prestigious Best Chef in the World title for the second year running. He adds this accolade to several other esteemed honours, such as The Best Chef award voted by his peers and The Best Chef City Gourmet.
This is the first time the ceremony has been held in the Spanish capital, also home to Muñoz’s acclaimed restaurant, and the national cuisine was certainly a stand-out among the best of the best in the culinary world: in the Top 100 list, no fewer than 18 Spanish professionals took home a prize.
Some 350 chefs and food experts voted on the night, and Muñoz is only the second cook ever to take the title for two consecutive years.
“It’s an honour, it’s incredible,” the chef gushed as he accepted his award on stage, thanking his “incredible team” for their dedication and hard work. Working in the city of Madrid is a privilege, Muñoz said, adding that the support of his wife, Cristina Pedroche, has been a key ingredient in the success of the restaurant.
Without her, he said, “we wouldn’t have achieved what we have achieved in the XO world.”
Overall, Spain was the country which preformed the best at the ceremony: After Dabiz Muñoz at the top, Joan Roca took the third spot, while Andoni Luis Aduriz (Mugaritz, Guipúzcoa) was in fifth place. Eduard Xatruch, Oriol Castro and Mateu Casañas (Disfrutar, Barcelona) came in 7th.
Aduriz also won The Best Chef Science award for his research and creativity in collaboration with experts from other disciplines.
The top ten list was completed by Rene Redzepi, Massimo Bottura (Osteria Francescana, Italy), Björn Frantzén, Alain Passard (L'Arpège, France), Ana Roš (Hiša Franko, Slovenia) and Alex Atala (DOM, Brazil).
