Spanish company vows to take 10,000 tourists to space within the decade

Fancy a holiday with a difference? How about something out of this world? If you can hold off for a few years, the company Halo Space might just have the trip for you as it’s committed to shuttling 10,000 tourists to the outer realms within the decade.

Speaking at the International Summit on Space Tourism in Marbella this week, chief executive Carlos Mira said that the company has already chosen Australia, Saudi Arabia, the United States and Spain as its four take-off bases.

Although a flight to view the Earth from the cosmos isn’t as pricey as a trip to the International Space Station, which would set you back a cool 30 million, at around 150,000 euros per ticket it’s a little more than the average summer holiday in Spain.

But while the prospect of an intergalactic vacation is still a couple of years away, Halo Space is already scouting for bases and Andalucia and Extremadura are currently the front runners. Seville, Huelva and Badajoz are the top picks.

So, how will we be getting there? In a balloon, of course. Well, technically a stratospheric balloon carrying a pressurised capsule designed to fit eight passengers, that will climb to a height of around 30 or 35 kilometres, offering a view that is quite literally out of this world through enormous windows.

The sensation is quite similar to flying in a commercial plane, Halo Space explained, and “at this height you are practically above the atmosphere and from there you have the view of the curvature of the Earth, of the blue halo – hence the name of the company – and of the black space above.”

Tickets for this trip of a lifetime go on sale next year as the company believes its balloon could be ready to take to the skies as early as 2025.
