Spanish Gov clarifies what documents can prove your residency post-Brexit
The authorities in Spain have released an updated guide on the necessary documentation for UK nationals to apply for residency
In collaboration with the British Embassy in Madrid, the Spanish authorities have updated their guide for UK nationals to register for residency status in Spain post-Brexit.
The majority of the changes in the new document are just small corrections and modifications, but the most noteworthy part of the revised guide is page 15, which details exactly what documentation UK nationals must present to demonstrate that they were living in Spain before December 31 2020.
Many British expats in Spain have had trouble trying to prove to the Spanish authorities that they really were living in Spain permanently before the end of the transition period on December 31 2020. These people are eligible to receive residency status in Spain if they don’t yet have it.

Nonetheless, one of the main reasons that residence requests are rejected or declared inadmissible is because of insufficient evidence of living in Spain before the end of the transition period. The new guide, which is currently only available in Spanish but should be published in English soon, now provides more examples of what documentation can be accepted.
This includes:
- Utility bills (electricity, water, gas)
- Telephone bills
- Proof of payment and receipts from in Spain
- Proof of official appointments and medical appointments
- Spanish employment contracts
- Employment records
- Educational certificates
- Proof of payment of Spanish income tax (Impuesto sobre la Renta de las Personas Físicas IRPF)
- Bank transactions showing regular banking activity in Spain (cash withdrawals, payments in supermarkets, petrol stations, etc.)
The last two of these are especially valued and will hold the most weight as proof for your residency application. The more proof you can provide, the better.
