ARCHIVED - Spanish government vows to reduce grocery prices by the end of the year
Spain will announce a new package of crisis measures this month that tackles the rising cost of food
While celebrating the national holiday of Constitution Day on December 6, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez assured that a new shock plan to counteract inflation will be introduced in Spain before the end of the year, with a particular focus on the cost of food.
Although measures like the 20 cent per litre fuel discount and tax breaks on gas and electricity have already been implemented, the rising price of groceries has hardly been mentioned by the country’s leader. However, now he is studying a “very ambitious” plan that will include lowering the cost of staple food items.
Despite the fact that groceries are one of the consumer products that have been steadily rising since April, suggestions by vice president Yolanda Díaz that supermarkets should offer a weekly affordable shopping basket were roundly dismissed. Those in the business accused her of trying to contravene the “proper functioning” of the food chain law.
"Food prices are making everyday life difficult for families. Neither the large distributors nor anyone else can show indifference,” Díaz said back in September, a plea that largely fell on deaf ears.
With opinions so divided, the government is going to have a tough time coming up with a solution that keeps everyone happy, but without a doubt something drastic needs to be done.
According to the inflation data for the month of October, the price of food has increased by 15.4% since this time last year, the largest jump in history.
