ARCHIVED - Spanish Guardia Civil wins over Batman fans!
Officers of the 177-year-old institution are no longer caped crusaders but their mission is still to protect the general public throughout Spain
The Guardia Civil has been enforcing the law in Spain for almost 180 years and is not always the most popular of institutions – particularly among drivers caught speeding! – but it continues to play a hugely important role in law enforcement and is constantly involved in making citizens aware of the services it provides.
This is not always an easy task, but a recent campaign in which the Guardia is compared to Batman is proving a remarkable success on social media. In essence, the thrust of the campaign is that although Guardia Civil officers no longer wear a cape (as they did in the past) they are still vital in protecting the safety of members of the public.

The Tweet shown above translates roughly as “Are you a fan of Batman? Well, watch one of his films, but if you need help in real life call 062 (the emergency number for the Guardia Civil).” The message goes on to apologize for the fact that they are no longer “caped crusaders” and to hope that this is not a cause for disappointment!
A flood of messages have been posted in reply, some lamenting the disappearance of the old cape and greatcoats but most accepting the need to move with the times and praising the work of the institution.
