ARCHIVED - Spanish heatwave comes to an end: Spain weather forecast May 1-4
Last week, several parts of Spain sweltered in the warmest April on record
The final stretch of April brought temperatures more typical of July to Spain, and the thermometers reached an incredible 38.8ºC in Cordoba, the highest value recorded for this month since at least 1945. The bank holiday weekend brought some changes though, with parts of Murcia and Alicante drowned in an unexpected deluge of rain that brought at least a little relief to the drought-parched land.
As we step into May, the weather is expected to return to normal for this time of year with a significant temperature drop in most of the country from Monday the 1st. The mercury will fall by around 14ºC in places and the rain will return in earnest to northern Spain.
There is a high likelihood of showers and storms in the Balearic Islands and Catalonia on Monday May 1, which has been issued with a yellow weather warning. Most of the country will begin the day rather overcast, although this should give way to sunny spells towards the afternoon.
The Mediterranean coast will remain cloudy throughout the day and some light showers can be expected.
After a few tropical nights last week, the evening temperatures will take a welcome dip across the board, while daytime temperatures will also take a nosedive in the Mediterranean.
Tuesday May 2 will start off cloudy in the extreme north of the country but the Balearic Islands will remain overcast all day with a chance of rain in the afternoon. Elsewhere, high clouds will prevail.
The mercury will take another upswing, with the exception of the Levante area, the Balearics and the east of the Canary Islands, where there will be little change. A light breeze will be felt in most of the country, tending to be stronger along the south coast.
Another cloudy start is forecast on Wednesday May 3, clearing later in the day. The rainfall will be heavy in Galicia and western Cantabria, where storms are likely. Morning fog banks are expected on the southern and eastern coasts while suspended dust is likely to make an appearance in the extreme south.
Daytime temperatures will drop in the west, along the eastern coast and in the Canary Islands but the thermometers will continue to climb in the rest of the country, easily exceeding 30ºC inland. The night-time temperature will also take a jump across Spain, more sharply in the north.
A new weather front will arrive from the west on Thursday May 4 resulting in cloudy skies and plenty of rain in northern Spain. Cloudy intervals are expected in most of the country and the Balearic Islands. The mercury will fall practically everywhere bar the Mediterranean area, where the thermometers are predicted to creep up one more.
