Spanish race slammed for giving female runners kitchen appliances as prizes
The winner of the Madrid event won a blender while the runners-up were gifted diet food
What should have been a celebration of all women on Spanish Mother’s Day turned into a shambles after the organisers of an all-female sporting event in Madrid deemed it appropriate to award the contestants gifts of fat-free products and kitchen appliances.
The Madrid’s Women’s Race, held on Sunday May 7, honoured the winner of the symbolic event with a Thermomix kitchen robot and awarded a selection of healthy food items to the runners-up. And although the first-prize gadget is the flagship product of the sponsors of the competition, the gift has caused outrage on social media.
The Secretary of State for Equality, Ángela Rodríguez 'Pam', has described the prizes as "sexist" and scathingly quipped that if you win, you’re a housewife and if not, at least you get products to help you to lose weight.
Organisers of the event immediately issued a statement on Twitter and apologised if any offence had been caused:
"We understand that seen from a biased perspective it can generate some controversy, and we apologize if this has been the case and if any woman may have felt offended, but it is a product that we believe does not have a sexist nature and that it is ideal for any sports person who wants to improve their nutritional habits. In any case, we accept the criticism, we reiterate our apologies if anyone has been offended, and we promise to take measures to avoid this controversy in the future," the statement read.
The participants of the Carrera de la Mujer covered 7.2 kilometres between Calle Serrano, near the National Library, and Paseo de Camoens. The victor was Serbian runner Ivana Zagorac, who stopped the clock in 24:07, beating her sister Della Sladjana in a sprint to the finish line. The first Spanish woman to cross the line was Silvia Rey Vega, third with 24:10.
