ARCHIVED - Spanish resorts begin to ban beach showers to save water
The initiative began in Andalucia but is expected to spread to other parts of Spain as the threat of drought looms
With meteorologists in Spain predicting that the third heatwave of the year, and the hottest day of 2022, could be upon us in a matter of days, several local authorities in popular Costa del Sol holiday resorts have taken the initiative to save water by banning showers at the beach.
There is scant possibility of rain in the coming weeks in what has already been an incredibly dry summer, and the threat of drought looms large as the country’s reservoirs lose what little water was gathered earlier in the year.
The Association of Municipalities of the Eastern Costa del Sol has asked all 31 municipalities to reduce their water consumption by at least 20%, and it may only be a matter of time before other regions of Spain follow suit.
Rincón de la Victoria, Vélez-Málaga and Algarrobo will be the first municipalities to impose the water ban.
The mayor of Vélez-Málaga, Antonio Moreno Ferrer said: "It is not easy to make this decision in the middle of summer and with the beaches full of users and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause but we are really faced with a critical situation and any measure that can help mitigate the effects of the drought must be carried out, starting by setting an example from local administrations."
Beginning on August 1, a total of 100 showers along Vélez-Málaga’s 22-kilometres of coastline, will be shut off.
In Rincón de la Victoria, stickers will be placed on the 60 showers dotted along the nine kilometres of beach in a move the mayor hopes will save a considerable amount of water, considering that “not everyone uses water responsibly, going so far as to use the showers for personal hygiene or cleaning beach equipment."
A water ban on filling private swimming pools is also being considered across the Costa del Sol.
