ARCHIVED - Spanish supermarkets resort to drastic solution to stop people stealing sunflower oil
Images have gone viral on the internet of the surprising lengths supermarkets are going to in Spain to prevent the shoplifting of sunflower oil and olive oil
The truckers’ strike continues throughout Spain and the organisers of these work stoppages have rejected the Spanish government’s offer of 500 million euros, calling it “a joke”. More than a week of disruption to the supply chain in Spain is causing shortages of certain products such as sunflower oil and milk in Spanish supermarkets.
In fact, companies as diverse as Lidl, Danone and Zara have warned of a temporary supply stoppage and there will be further shortages if a solution is not found immediately.
Theft alarms for bottles of cooking oil
Although supermarkets and shops like Mercadona and Lidl have called for people to remain calm and not engage in panic buying, it is becoming increasingly common to see the shelves in supermarkets starting to empty of some products.
Likewise, other images that have gone viral on social media in Spain are bottles of sunflower oil with alarms attached of the kind that are normally found on expensive liquors and perfumes bells, in order to try to prevent people stealing them as they become ever more in demand.
Last week, many supermarkets began to put up signs saying they would ration the number of bottles people can buy, but now they have gone a step further, as shown in these viral photos on Twitter where commentators say they are “surprised” and joke “Let the meteorite fall on us now”.
