Spanish taxi driver arrested for attempted rape of drunk British tourist
The young woman was allegedly dumped, half naked, in a car park in Mallorca
A 28-year-old British tourist claims to have been the victim of a horrific attempted rape by a taxi driver in Mallorca. The alleged attack occurred in the early hours of September 15, in a car park in Camp de Mar.
According to the victim's account, she had been out having dinner with her parents in Port d'Andratx and had decided to stay on to enjoy a few more drinks. As the night wore on, she hailed a taxi to take her back to her family's residence in Cala Fornells. However, the driver, a 40-year-old man from Andratx, allegedly had other intentions.
Instead of taking her home, the driver veered off course and stopped in a deserted car park in Camp de Mar. The young woman, who was intoxicated, claims that the driver attempted to force himself on her, but she managed to fight him off and call her parents for help.
When the police arrived, they found the victim crying and in a state of distress, with her dress and underwear torn. The driver had abandoned her in the car park and fled the scene. The young woman was taken to Son Espases hospital in Palma for a medical examination.
The Guardia Civil launched an investigation and reviewed CCTV footage from local establishments to identify the suspect. When questioned, the taxi driver claimed that the victim had made advances on him, but this version of events was deemed suspicious by investigators. He was subsequently read his rights as a suspect and charged with attempted sexual assault.
With further questioning, the cab driver claimed that the victim climbed into the passenger seat and made advances on him, which is why he stopped the car and left her in the car park.
After the Guardia Civil reported the alleged assault and subsequent arrest to the Andratx Town Hall, the taxi driver was sacked.
