Spanish truckers abandon tractor strike after 2 days
The nationwide protest by farmers in Spain has now entered its second week
In a surprise move that will come as a relief to drivers up and down the country, the Platform for the Defence of the Road Freight Transport Sector, a group which represents truckers and hauliers throughout Spain, has called off its indefinite strike in support of Spanish farmers.
The farmers’ protest has now entered its second week and motorists in every region have been stuck in endless traffic jams on motorways and hemmed in on city centre streets as demonstrating agricultural workers take to the roads in their tractors.
Although the truckers only joined the protests over the weekend, their addition threatened even more chaos on Spanish roads, but without warning, the Platform pulled itself from the fray at 9pm on Monday February 12 after just two days.
The group has said it will provide the “corresponding statements and explanations” at some stage today (February 13).
The Platform effectively paralysed a large part of Spain’s economic activity with nationwide strikes in March 2022 and has jumped on the bandwagon of the tensions within the agricultural sector, which began a fortnight ago in France and has spread to the rest of Europe.
Likewise in November 2022, the association threatened to call another widespread work stoppage to repeat the success achieved a few months before, but agreements were reached with the Ministry of Transport at the eleventh hour and the strikes were called off.
But it seems that there is also some dissension in the ranks when it comes to the farmers. The coordinated protests were originally organised by some of the main agricultural associations (Asaja, COAG and Upa), while another group known as Platform 6F promoted the first couple of days of the strikes.
However, the disgruntled farmers are increasingly breaking off from these larger groups and calling for their own local demonstrations, which are only adding to the chaos and confusion.
