ARCHIVED - Spanish vaccine looks set to enter production stage in October
If the production timeline for the Spanish jab is met, it could be available by early 2022
As the vaccination campaign races towards its new target of immunising 90 per cent of the population to achieve the elusive herd immunity, the Minister of Science and Innovation, Diana Morant, announced the promising news that the Spanish coronavirus jab, developed by pharmaceutical company Hipra in Catalonia, could enter into production as soon as October, meaning that it would be available in early 2022.
Morant has high hopes for the home-grown vaccine which is currently doing “very well” in human trials and has been designed specifically with the more virulent Covid strains in mind. It is showing strong results against all of the known Covid mutations and has the added benefit of requiring only regular refrigeration, something that will make it far easier to transport and store.
In addition, the minister confirmed that a second vaccine, while still in the preclinical phase, is showing a lot of promise in Spain.
