The ship ‘Meteoro’ will depart from Cartagena to support NATO in the Ukraine crisis
Spanish Defence Minister Margarita Robles has announced that Spain is bringing forward the planned launch of the ‘Blas de Lezo’ frigate amidst rising tensions with Russia due to its military mobilisation at the border with Ukraine. As part of its agreement with NATO, Spain will deploy the Maritime Action Ship ‘Meteoro’ from Cartagena to the Black Sea on Friday January 21.The Spanish troops will join NATO in attempting to deter Russia from invading Ukraine, which has led to one of the greatest escalations of tension with the United States since the Cold War.The Minister pointed out that Spain has been participating in all the deployments organised by NATO for years and confirmed that the possibility of an air deployment in Bulgaria is also being discussed, in addition to the one which already takes place each year in Lithuania. Given the imminent threat, allied forces in Romania are currently busy reinforcing their aerial surveillance capabilities on the southern border with Russia.Ms Robles said that the Spanish position on the Ukraine crisis is that they are in favour of de-escalating the tension by diplomatic means, but she has also warned that “NATO is very clear” about its objective. “Russia cannot tell any country what it can do,” she stressed, “and NATO will defend any country that wants to enter” this organisation.According to Ms Robles, Spain is already considered a “serious ally” of NATO, having deployed more than 300 soldiers from the Army in Latvia, in addition to the role of the Spanish eurofighters in monitoring the Baltic.Image: Ministerio de Defensa
