Spanish Mayor under investigation for imitating Pope with a toilet brush
The mayor has been accused of insulting religion after his imitation of the pope has backfired
Carlos Martínez, the Mayor of Soria and the new secretary general of the PSOE in Castilla y León, has landed himself in a mess after a stunt of his has outraged the people of his city. Mr Martínez drove through the city of Soria atop a mock Popemobile, blessing residents using a wet toilet brush.
The bizarre actions of the Mayor have now forced him to apologise for what he has done after the courts have come after him, and some have questioned whether he can remain in office after pulling such a stunt.
The Mayor’s actions have caused outrage amongst the citizens and a backlash from the Spanish Foundation for Christian Lawyers. Martínez has since apologised and stated that he “did not intend” to mock Christianity, and that his actions were a “stupid mistake”.
The same group of Christian lawyers have held strong opinions in the past in relation to Christianity and how it has been portrayed by different people in Spain in the last few years. The group reported the carnival in Torrevieja in 2024 for “corruption of minors” when several underage girls were deemed to be wearing leotards that were a little too skimpy for their liking, and in 2017 the group reported a Christmas nativity scene in Seville that depicted the Virgin Mary as a vagina.
The president of the Christian Lawyers Association, Poland Castellanos, said the Mayor “attacked a large part of the population, Catholics. Politicians should respect everyone. The Mayor of Soria should resign and withdraw from politics.”
The group have said in reference to the trial, that “we must respect the course of justice” as they seek to get the mayor on crimes involving insult (article 522 of the Penal Code).
The Mayor has been summoned as a defendant in court on accusations that he intentionally mocked the Christian faith, and is due in court on February 5.
