ARCHIVED - Spanish President will travel to China to meet with Xi Jinping
The Chinese president has invited the head of Spain for talks at the end of this month

The President of China, Xi Jinping, has invited Spanish President Pedro Sanchez to visit him in the Asian country on March 30 and 31, shortly after the Chinese head of state met his counterpart in Russia in what is believed could mark a turning point in the war in Ukraine.
In a recent trip to Moscow, Jinping met informally with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and offered to act as an intermediary between the warring nations, presenting a 12-point peace initiative to resolve the conflict.
Although the world waits with bated breath, it’s unlikely there’ll be much movement towards a settlement anytime soon, even with the involvement of China, since neither side is particularly willing to enter into talks.
Spanish President Pedro Sanchez himself appealed to China at the last G-20 Summit to “use its power to influence Putin and end the war” and both leaders at the time agreed on the “need to cooperate” to find solutions to the financial impact of the Ukraine invasion, especially in terms of skyrocketing energy and food prices.
In addition, Sanchez promised to strengthen trade relations between the European Union and China when Spain reaches the rotating presidency of the EU, which will begin in July this year. Of course, he also took the opportunity to stress "the need for there to be reciprocity for Spanish companies in China."
It’s been a pretty good week for the Spanish president, who has beaten yet another vote of no confidence and will jet off to a meeting of the European Council in Brussels after wrapping up his parliamentary duties. Over the weekend, Sanchez is due to make an appearance at the Ibero-American summit in Santo Domingo.
