ARCHIVED - Spring arrives in Spain with another rise in temperatures: weather forecast Mar 20-23
The north of Spain will be hit with cool Atlantic fronts this week but the mercury will continue to climb in the south
Spain officially waves goodbye to winter and welcomes spring at 10.24pm on Monday March 20, a season which will last for 92 days and 18 hours until summer begins on June 21. As is usual for this time of year, the weather is expected to be unsettled this coming week, with a succession of Atlantic fronts bringing rain and cooler temperatures to northern Spain.
Elsewhere though, the days and evenings will remain pleasantly mild with plenty of bright, sunny spells.
Spring will get off to a cloudy start in Galicia with the possibility of some light rain at the end of the day but along the Mediterranean, any early morning clouds should dissipate towards the afternoon. The Canary Islands can also expect some showers, particularly in the south on Monday March 20.
Daytime temperatures will tend to rise overall with the exception of southern Andalucía, the Mediterranean and the Canary Islands, where there will be little change.
Highs of 22ºC are forecast in Alicante while Murcia will reach a pleasant 24ºC.
Most of the north will again be overcast and showery on Tuesday March 21 but this is unlikely to spread further south, where low morning clouds should clear early on, making way for a bright and sunny day.
The mercury will take a notable dip in Galicia and Cantabria but continue to rise in the southeast.
Moving on to Wednesday March 22 and an inactive Atlantic front will leave cloudy skies and generally weak rainfall in Galicia and western Asturias. The rest of the country will be mostly clear with some high clouds, although the morning will be particularly overcast on the coasts of Catalonia and the south of Alicante.
Although there are no weather alerts in place, the State Meteorological Agency has warned of the possibility of calimas – episodes of Saharan dust clouds – across all of the Canary Islands on Wednesday.
The thermometers will continue to climb in most of Spain but will drop slightly along the western coast.
The persistent Atlantic front will affect the northwest third of the country on Thursday March 23, creating abundant cloudiness. Light rainfall is expected in Galicia which could extend into Cantabria and the northwest of Castilla y León towards the afternoon.
In the rest of the country, slightly cloudy skies are forecast with early morning fog banks likely in coastal areas.
Daytime temperatures will rise on the Islands and in eastern and northern Spain, and the mercury will steadily climb on the southeastern and Andalucían coasts.
