ARCHIVED - Storm Celia brings widespread rain to Spain: weather forecast March 14-18
Aemet has warned that the storm is unpredictable, and its course may change as it travels across Spain this week
Storm Celia is about to make itself felt across the entire country this week with abundant rainfall, strong winds and rough seas expected to hit much of mainland Spain, as well as the Balearic and Canary Islands in the coming days. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), just as one Atlantic front passed away from the peninsula over the weekend, a new storm has now formed in the southwest of Spain.
Monday and Tuesday – March 14 and 15
For the first couple of days of this week, meteorologists predict that the worst of the storm will remain confined to the southwest of the country.
The rainfall will begin in Galicia and the extreme northwest of Spain, with occasional showers in the Balearic Islands and southern Andalucía, before sweeping from south to north as Monday progresses.
Rainfall will be more scattered on Tuesday, and will mainly affect the south of the country, and on both Monday and Tuesday strong winds from the east are expected to create blustery weather and rough sea conditions in the Mediterranean.
In addition, dust will pour into the Balearic Islands and across Spain from Monday, spreading rapidly, reducing visibility and creating muddy rain in the wetter areas.
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday – March 16, 17 and 18
The storm is likely to begin weakening from Wednesday as it moves eastwards, but this could coincide with the arrival of a very humid air mass from the Mediterranean, which would displace the drier African mass with plenty of suspended dust to coat streets and gardens across Spain.
Abundant rainfall is predicted across Spain and in the Balearic Islands throughout Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
Aemet has cautioned that storm Celia is arriving under a cloud of uncertainty, and the resulting weather is likely to change as the week goes on as a result of its great unpredictability. The smallest variation in the storm behaviour, the experts have explained, can lead to a significant change in the location and intensity of the rainfall in the coming days.
Weather warnings have been issued throughout the week (mostly yellow, but some orange) from northern Galicia down to Andalucía in the south, but again, these could well change as storm Celia makes its way across the country in the next few days.
