Storm Ivo puts Spain on high alert: Weather forecast Jan 30-Feb 2
Red and orange weather warnings have been activated in several parts of Spain
Weather alerts on Thursday January 30
Spain might still be suffering the aftershocks of storm Herminia, which claimed one life and caused widespread damage, but the country has hardly had time to draw a breath before being hit with another destructive weather front: storm Ivo.
Ivo is the ninth high-impact storm of the 2024-2025 season and swooped in across northern Spain on Wednesday January 29, creating gales that were just short of hurricane-force in Galicia, Cantabria and the Basque Country.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), Spain will remain under the influence of storm Ivo for around 48 hours before the weather starts to improve on Friday, although the weekend is still likely to be wet in the Mediterranean.
Thursday January 30
Storm Ivo will start moving towards the Mediterranean on Thursday, coinciding with a cold front from the north. As a result, the day will be very cloudy in most parts and there’s a strong chance of rain or showers across the country, particularly later in the day.
The snow level will drop to around 700-900 metres.
Daytime temperatures will fall in the north and southeast, with only the Canary Islands expected to breach the 20-degree mark.
Red weather alert for storms/dangerous sea conditions/wind: Cantabria, Basque Country.
Orange weather alert for storms/dangerous sea conditions/wind: Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y Leon, Catalonia, Galicia, Madrid, Navarra.
Yellow weather alert for storms/dangerous sea conditions/wind: Andalucía, Castilla-La Mancha, La Rioja, Valencian Community, Melilla.
Friday January 31
Friday will be much brighter and calmer as Ivo starts to move away, but as the storm transitions into a low pressure over the Mediterranean it will result in locally heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms in the Balearic Islands and the east of Spain.
Snowfall is expected in the early hours in the Pyrenees, with an altitude of around 800-1000 metres.
Maximum temperatures will rise in the far north, with no changes in the rest of the country.
Orange weather alert for storms/dangerous sea conditions/wind: Aragon, Catalonia, Navarra.
Yellow weather alert for low temperatures/dangerous sea conditions: Castilla y Leon, Basque Country, Valencian Community.
Saturday February 1
The settled weather is expected to continue in most of Spain with clear skies forecast thanks to the entry of a high pressure system. However, in the Mediterranean, a low pressure system will continue to cause locally strong showers accompanied by storms in the Balearic Islands.
In Galicia, due to the approach of a front, cloudy skies with light rain are expected, which could extend to the rest of the Cantabrian Sea.
The mercury will continue to drop along the Mediterranean coast, while the temperatures should begin to climb elsewhere.
Yellow weather alert for dangerous sea conditions: Catalonia.
Sunday February 2
On Sunday, a warm front is likely to arrive from the west of the country, leaving very cloudy skies with rain in western Spain, although the showers should be generally weak. In the Balearic Islands and its surroundings, showers could also continue, accompanied by thunderstorms.
In the rest of the country, the skies will be partly cloudy but the day will be dry.
Temperatures will finally start to creep up in the Mediterranean and the Balearics, although the thermometers won’t edge past the high-teens in most parts.
