ARCHIVED - Storms continue to batter southern Spain: weather outlook October 7-9
The unsettled weather is set to continue through the weekend across Spain
This week has thrown out every weather condition imaginable, with much of the south under a deluge of rain as temperatures continue to climb in the north of Spain. The outlook for the coming weekend is just as unsettled, as a DANA sweeping across the country has put several communities on alert until at least Saturday night.
Friday October 7
Friday looks set to to be the wettest day of the weekend, with the east of the country and the Balearic Islands under weather warnings for storms. The worst of the rain will hit the Valencian Community and Catalonia, which have been issued with orange level alerts (significant risk) until mid-afternoon. Here, up to 100 litres per square metre are expected within a 12-hour period.
On yellow alert are the Balearics, Tarragona, Barcelona, Castellón and Alicante, where 25 litres of rain will fall in just an hour.
The day will be slightly overcast in most of the country although the temperatures will rise in the Cantabrian area and in the extreme southeast, reaching the high-30s in many parts of Andalucia and even climbing to 31ºC in Seville.
Saturday October 8
A slight improvement is expected on Saturday although the east coast in still on yellow alert; in particular, Aragon, Catalonia and the Valencian Community are in for more heavy rain.
It will be another mostly cloudy and showery start to the day for the most part, although the worst will clear during the afternoon leaving clearer skies. However, this will be replaced with a considerable amount of haze in the southeast, the Balearic and Canary Islands.
The temperatures will follow Friday’s trend for the most part, with the exception of northern Spain where the thermometers will take a slight dip. The nights will remain exceptionally warm for this time of year, hovering around the high teens in the south.
Sunday October 9
There’s very little change on Sunday but although more showers and possible thunderstorms are forecast in Andalucia, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia in the afternoon, no weather warnings have yet been issued.
Mostly cloudy in much of the country and an approaching Atlantic front will mean a predominantly overcast day in the north, with the probability of some weak rain.
Daytime temperatures will remain in the high-20s in the south with little change in the rest of Spain.
