Storms give way to 40-degree heat: Spain weather forecast June 15-18
The intense temperatures will put several provinces in Spain on alert this weekend
After storm Oscar and a subsequent DANA ravaged much of Spain earlier this week with intense storms and flooding, the weather is set to make a dramatic U-turn overnight, with scorching temperatures returning just in time for the weekend.
"This Thursday, dry and hot weather will dominate due to the presence of a warm air ridge that will cover most of the Peninsula," Meteored experts explained, adding that the mercury will continue to spike as the days go on.
This approaching air mass will mean parts of Spain will hit and even possibly exceed 40ºC for the first time this year, which is especially likely in the southwestern regions and, above all, the Guadalquivir valley.
Beginning on June 15 the weather will stabilise across the country, with a predominance of clear or slightly cloudy skies with practically no chance of rain anywhere. The day will begin a little overcast in Galicia, Cantabria and around the Pyrenees, but this too will lift as the hours go by.
The temperatures will shoot up across the board, with the exception of the Mediterranean coasts of Andalucia, Murcia and the Valencian Community, where the mercury will remain similar to previous days. In the extreme southwest though the thermometers will exceed 35ºC in many areas.

Alicante: 20ºC; 28ºC
Málaga: 21ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 18ºC; 34ºC
The heat will grow in intensity on Friday June 16 and most of the interior of southern Spain will exceed 35ºC. A bright day for the most part, although the cloud cover will increase towards the afternoon inland and in Mallorca, bringing the possibility of some isolated showers and even stormy episodes later in the day.
The mercury should once again tip 40ºC in parts of the southwest, where night-time temperatures will be torrid, rarely dropping below 20ºC.
Yellow weather warning for extreme heat: Andalucia and Extremadura.

Alicante: 21ºC; 29ºC
Málaga: 22ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 18ºC; 34ºC
Things will really begin to ramp up on Saturday June 17 when cities like Córdoba and Seville are forecast to hit 39ºC. In fact, the only regions in the entire country that will remain below 30ºC are the extreme northwest, mountainous areas surrounding the Pyrenees and the Canary Islands.
Instability is expected to return to northern Spain on Saturday with the arrival of an Atlantic low, and overcast skies will give way to thunderstorms from late morning. Occasional storms could also hit parts of the southeast but the southeast and Mediterranean coast are in for another bright and sunny day.

Alicante: 22ºC; 30ºC
Málaga: 21ºC; 27ºC
Murcia: 19ºC; 35ºC
The weather will become increasingly unsettled across Spain and the Balearic Islands on Sunday June 18 thanks to the influence of the lingering Atlantic low. Galicia, Cantabria and the southeast will be rather overcast for most of the day while cloudy intervals are forecast for the rest of the country.
Showers and storms will be likely in large areas of northern Spain and the southeastern mountains, but there’s no rain on the horizon in the southwest or along the Mediterranean coast.
Temperatures will drop in general in the Canary Islands and on the mainland, more pronounced inland. However, the mercury could rise a tad in the Mediterranean and the night-time won’t dip below below 20ºC in the Guadalquivir valley or on the peninsular Mediterranean coast.
No weather warnings are in place on Sunday.
