Stranded Spanish holidaymakers evacuated from Israel
The first plane touched down in Madrid carrying Spaniards and expat residents
As the situation between Gaza and Israel continues to escalate, most international airlines have cancelled commercial flights, leaving countless foreigners stranded in the middle of a war zone. Spain has now begun evacuating people trapped in Israel and on Wednesday morning, October 11, the first chartered flight touched down at the Torrejón de Ardoz Air Base in Madrid with more than 200 Spaniards, EU citizens and third country citizens residing in Spain, on board.
The Ministry of Defence has chartered two Airbus A330 jets, each with a capacity to carry 272 passengers, for this very purpose, and the second plane is expected to set off for Israel later on Wednesday afternoon.
"We have finally arrived, we are finally home. Now we are going to see our families," one relieved Spanish passenger said when he disembarked.
According to the government, the planes will be filled with people from Spain who were on holiday in Israel, there on business or had their flights cancelled, but there are currently no plans to repatriate Spanish citizens resident in Israel.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to bomb Gaza relentlessly, with more than 100 strikes reported in the last few hours as the full-scale offensive enters its fifth day. In total, the death toll in Israeli territory amounts to 1,200, while the Gaza authorities report 900 deaths in their region.
