ARCHIVED - Study shows Omicron results in 80 per cent fewer hospitalisations
The variant is also found to cause fewer serious illnesses
According to an analysis of Covid cases carried out by the South African National Institute of Infectious Diseases (NICD) between October 1 and November 30, the Omicron variant was linked to a 70% lower risk of serious illness compared to the Delta strain and actually resulted in an 80% lower risk of hospitalisation once contracted.
The research has yet to be peer reviewed but the preliminary data also suggests that once a patient reaches the level where they must be hospitalised with Omicron, their risk of death is the same as with the Delta variant.
Much is still unknown about Omicron, but the WHO confirmed in recent days that people who have overcome Covid and those who are double jabbed can still become infected, while a study led by researchers at the LKS School of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong show that the new variant infects and multiplies 70 times faster in the bronchi than the other coronavirus strains.
This evidence could explain why Omicron appears to be far more contagious than other forms of the virus. On the other hand, the research found that Omicron infection in the lungs is significantly less than with the original SARS-CoV-2, which may be an indicator that this strain is less severe overall.
