Summer storms and falling temperatures: Spain weather forecast August 12-15
Heavy rain starting in the north of the country will spread to southern Spain later this week
Weather alerts on Monday August 12
After an absolute scorcher of a weekend that saw much of Spain grapple with temperatures in the 40s, big changes are afoot with the entry of a blast of cold air from the northwest. This front will sweep across northern Spain at the beginning of the week, leaving behind lots of rain and summer storms.
This weather pattern will also drag the temperatures down across the board, and there’s a chance that the rain could spread to the south of the country later in the week.
The stable weather should persist in most of the country on Monday August 12 but the front will begin making its way through the north and extreme east of the country, bringing overcast skies, showers and even intense storms to mountainous regions.
It should remain dry elsewhere for the time being, but the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) hasn’t ruled out isolated dry storms in parts of the south.
An almost general drop in temperatures is expected, bringing to an end the fourth heatwave of the season. However, western Andalucía and inland towns of the southeast are still on alert for temperatures exceeding 36ºC or 37ºC.
Heading into Tuesday August 13, the cold front will leave behind more thunderstorms in the northeast, and the approach of another Atlantic front will increase cloudiness in the northwest, with rain moving from west to east through Galicia and the Cantabrian Sea.
In the rest of the country, partly cloudy skies are expected, which could lead to fog in the Strait of Gibraltar, the Balearic Islands, the interior of the Mediterranean and the far north.
Daytime temperatures will continue to drop pretty much everywhere, more noticeably in Andalucía and the Canary Islands but even so, the mercury will continue to exceed 36ºC in valleys in the south, parts of Mallorca and the south of the Canary Islands.
Although there are no active weather alerts on Wednesday August 14, intense showers and storms are forecast in large parts of the north and east, possibly extending in a weaker way to central and southeastern Spain.
Temperatures will continue to fall everywhere but the west of the country and, as usual, the mercury won’t dip far below the mid-30s in the extreme south.
The presence of a DANA in the eastern Mediterranean area will result in abundant cloudiness and intense showers and occasional thunderstorms on Thursday August 15.
This will cause a gradual rise in temperature in the west and north, while the mercury should drop in the southeast of Spain and on the islands.
