Summer weather arrives: Spain weather forecast June 20-23
Temperatures will approach 40ºC in many parts of southern Spain this coming weekend, the first of the summer
Temperatures on Sunday afternoon, June 23
Summer officially begins this Thursday night, June 20 (at 11.51pm, to be precise), and the weather gods seem to have received the memo, as the remainder of the month is set to be a scorcher in most of Spain. In fact, according to the current forecasts, this year shows every indication of becoming the third warmest since records began, only surpassed by 2017 and 2022.
But we’re not quite done with the rain yet, and Thursday will still be quite unsettled and stormy. However, the damp weather will be mostly confined to northern Spain and the first full day of summer on Friday will bring a major upsurge in temperatures ahead of a scorching weekend.
Thursday June 20
The instability associated with the lingering DANA will continue on Thursday in the north of the country and the Balearic Islands, and hail and thunderstorms are forecast in the likes of Aragón and Catalonia. During the morning, this rain could spread in a weaker way to the Valencian Community.
Further south, the skies will be mostly bright and sunny and the typical summer heat will be kept at bay, with the mercury remaining below 30ºC practically everywhere.
Storm warnings have been issued in several regions, including Valencia.
Friday June 21
Thanks to high pressures across the board, Friday will be a lovely clear day for the most part, although showers and the occasional storm are likely around the Pyrenees and in the northeast of Catalonia.
This is the day when the temperatures start to climb, with many parts of southern Spain tipped to hit 35ºC.
Saturday June 22
Saturday will again be very hot in the south of the country, particularly inland, although most areas will see the mercury shoot up. Murcia will bake in 35ºC temperatures while the thermometers will reach a sweltering 37ºC in Cordoba.
A weak Atlantic front will threaten overcast skies and light rain in northern Spain, which could become more intense at the end of the day. For the rest of the country, mostly clear skies with the occasional high cloud are forecast.
Sunday June 23
On Sunday the skies will clear again in most of Spain, with temperatures rising, except for the Mediterranean and the Eastern Cantabrian Sea, where they will be somewhat lower. The mercury will reach 37-39ºC in the Guadalquivir Valley and south of Extremadura, hovering around 35ºC in other inland areas of the south.
Overall, Sunday will be a typical June summer day.
