ARCHIVED - Summer storms and rising temperatures: Spain weather outlook August 22-25
The heat will settle in Spain this week with a high probability of storms in mountainous areas
The coming week will be sunny and warm for the most part across Spain, with the occasional afternoon storm forecast, particularly in mountainous regions and in the north of the country. In general though, the day-time temperature will be hotter than normal for this time of year, with plenty of tropical nights on the horizon.
There will be a cloudy start to Monday August 22 in the north of Spain, with light rains in the eastern Cantabrian Sea and the north face of the Pyrenees. During the day, the thermometers will touch 35ºC in most of the south and east, exceeding 40ºC in the Guadalquivir valley.
Andalucia is on an orange level alert for heat while Castilla y Leon, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and Melilla have been issued with a yellow warning.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Monday
Alicante: minimum 23ºC; maximum 31ºC
Almeria: 21ºC; 33ºC
Malaga: 21ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 23ºC; 35ºC
Tuesday August 23 will be slightly cloudy in most of the country with rain forecast once more in the north of Spain, drying up as the afternoon arrives. Night-time temperatures will take a bit of a dip in the Canary Islands and the south of the country but during the day the thermometers will climb, easily exceeding 35ºC once more.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Tuesday
Alicante: minimum 24ºC; maximum 32ºC
Almeria: 22ºC; 35ºC
Malaga: 21ºC; 27ºC
Murcia: 24ºC; 35ºC
The instability will begin to increase on Wednesday August 24 and the day will be mostly cloudy in the north and east of the country, with showers and storms forecast in these areas that could be accompanied by hail. In the rest of Spain, rain is less likely but a dry storm could blow in from the south in the afternoon.
Day-time temperatures will rise in the eastern half of the country, the northern plateau, the Gulf of Cádiz and the Balearic Islands, dropping slightly in the west but will remain largely unchanged elsewhere.
Minimum and maximum temperatures on Wednesday
Alicante: minimum 23ºC; maximum 32ºC
Almeria: 23ºC; 34ºC
Malaga: 22ºC; 30ºC
Murcia: 22ºC; 36ºC
The unstable weather will continue into Thursday August 25 in the northwest and northeast but should remain dry and sunny in the Balearic Islands, the southwest and along the Mediterranean coast, with a Calima possible in the extreme south.
The temperatures are unlikely to dip much below the mid-30s in the south again but will generally decrease in the Canary Islands, central Spain and the north and east of the country.

Malaga: 23ºC; 29ºC
Murcia: 23ºC; 36ºC
