ARCHIVED - Survey examines why people refuse to be vaccinated in Spain
The report details the age groups that refuse the Covid jab in Spain and asks the reason why
Much of Europe is currently in the grip of the sixth wave of the coronavirus pandemic and in Spain, numbers are steadily increasing. Despite this, the government is still sitting on the Covid passport fence and instead has decided to redouble its efforts to convince the remaining populations to avail themselves of the jab.
To date, more than 37 and a half million Spaniards have received both doses, ranking this country in the top 15 according to Our World in Data. However, 3,922,172 people remain unvaccinated in Spain, and the November CIS barometer gives some indication as to why.
General vaccination data
Broadly speaking, of those surveyed by the Sociological Research Centre, 94.9% of people claim to be fully vaccinated. Of the people not yet jabbed, a huge 57.8% confirmed that they will not be vaccinated against coronavirus under any circumstances.
For those avoiding the vaccine, the majority (28.3%) do not trust vaccines in general, while 17.1% are afraid that they will suffer adverse side effects. Worryingly, 1.9% of those surveyed don’t believe Covid exists at all.
Sociodemographic data
The number of unvaccinated men is slightly higher than that of women (5.5% compared to 4.1%) and the age groups with the highest number of unvaccinated individuals are those between 25 and 34 years (8.2%) and between 35 and 44 (6.5%). The most vulnerable population, those aged 65 and over, have the lowest figure of non-vaccinations, at just 3.4%.
Socioeconomic data
Income also appears to play a part in the decision to avoid the Covid jab, as, according to “subjective class identification”, the majority of unvaccinated people (6.4%) belong to what has been called the low / poorer class, followed by those belonging to the lower-middle class (5.1%).
The contentious issue of using Covid passports to access nightlife and leisure venues is still very much up for debate in Spain and has proved to be a divisive topic. While the Basque Country has been overruled by the courts on the grounds that the measure goes against fundamental rights, the Valencian Community is poised to introduce the requirement in the coming weeks. For now, though, the Ministry of Health is refusing to implement a national decree on the passports.
