ARCHIVED - Suspected serial killer targeting gay men on the loose in Spain
The suspect could be responsible for as many as 8 murders in Bilbao in northern Spain

It might sound like something out of a cheesy horror movie, but a real-life hunt is underway in the Basque Country in northern Spain for a suspected serial killer that has already been linked to eight suspicious deaths. The police have managed to identify the man, but his current whereabouts are unknown, and he was last seen in Bilbao at the home of his most recent victim.
Official sources claim that the suspect targets members of the gay community through a dating app, posing as a homosexual man named Carlos. Once inside his victim’s homes, he drugged them with liquid ecstasy and left them to die, while clearing out their bank accounts and wiring transfers to himself.
The trigger for the investigation came in October 2021, when the family of a man who had apparently died of natural causes noticed that thousands of euros had been moved from his account in the days following his death. A follow-up post-mortem revealed traces of drugs in his system, and further digging revealed that one of his last movements was to meet a man he’d met on a dating app.
Shortly afterwards, another victim came forward: he’d managed to escape when his attacker tried to strangle him, and the suspect made a fatal error by leaving behind his backpack, complete with his identification and copious amounts of liquid ecstasy.
The police now believe that the suspect may be linked to as many as 8 murders in the same area of Bilbao between September and October of 2021. The regional agents also suspect that the alleged perpetrator could have carried out his grisly killing sprees in other regions, such as Madrid and the Valencian Community.
The LGTBI+ community has appealed to the authorities to dedicate “all the necessary human and material resources” to capturing the killer, and has urged users of dating apps to adopt “protective measures” if meeting up with a stranger.
