ARCHIVED - Swedish tourist arrested at Malaga airport after faking jewellery theft to claim on holiday insurance
The woman, who had been staying on the Costa del Sol with her young son, reported her jewellery stolen just hours before heading home.
A 32-year-old Swedish woman has been arrested at Málaga airport for allegedly faking a burglary at a holiday rental apartment in Fuengirola to claim on her holiday insurance.
The National Police grew suspicious when the tourist went to the station in Fuengirola to lodge a report just hours before she was due to catch a flight back to Stockholm.
The woman told officers that somebody had broken into her holiday flat while she was out and made off with a high-end watch worth 15,000 euros, two white gold wedding rings, a suitcase worth 600 euros and a credit card. However, an inspection of the flat failed to reveal any signs of the lock having been forced, and everything was neat and tidy inside. Moreover, the woman mentioned that she was covered by not just one but three holiday insurance policies.
Investigators got in touch with their colleagues at the airport and asked them to intercept the woman and see what she was carrying. Lo and behold, a quick search revealed the watch and one of the rings reported as stolen, leading officers to believe that she had made it all up intending to claim on her insurance.
