ARCHIVED - Teen girl caught in Cartagena after setting fire to Parque Sauces dinosaur
The controversial Parque Sauces has been the site of other acts of vandalism recently
Local Police in Cartagena have identified a 16-year-old minor as the person behind setting fire to a dinosaur in the Parque Sauces park.
The fire occurred on Saturday July 30, and officers began investigating immediately.
They soon identified a teenage girl as a likely suspect and when they went to her home, she admitted in front of her parents that she had started the fire.
The National Police force will now open a case and transfer it to the juvenile prosecutor’s office. It is expected that the parents will have to bear the cost of the damage caused to the dinosaur, according to municipal sources in a press release.
The dinosaur is part of the children’s play area that was inaugurated in Parque Sauces at the beginning of this year after the extensive and costly remodelling of the park.
After previous episodes of vandalism in the park, the City Hall is in the process of installing CCTV security cameras, which residents’ associations have been calling for for months.
The Council is also installing a newsstand to improve facilities for people using the park.
While in the past, the teens had limited themselves to breaking off the heads of the dinosaurs and damaging other parts of the park installations, setting a fire is undoubtedly much more serious and dangerous, especially in the current climate of wildfires that are plaguing Spain and the rest of Europe.
Cartagena’s Councillor for Safety, Juan Pedro Torralba, thanked the officers for the speed with which they acted and located the person behind the fire.
