Tejeda crowned Spain's shining star for Christmas
The Gran Canaria village wins the Ferrero Rocher competition and prepares to light up the festive season
One of Gran Canaria’s prettiest mountain villages is about to shine even brighter this Christmas. Tejeda has been named the winner of this year’s Ferrero Rocher “Together We Shine Brighter” competition, earning the coveted title of Spain’s Christmas ‘Star Town’.The announcement was made on Sunday night, with an elated mayor, Francisco Perera, expressing gratitude for the incredible support his small community received. “We’re deeply thankful for the affection and votes that came from every corner of the islands, and even beyond,” he said.
The victory followed a month-long national contest between 17 towns, each representing an autonomous community, throughout Spain. In the final vote, Tejeda triumphed over Fuentes del Maestre in Badajoz, Extremadura, after an earlier round that also featured the Asturian village of Cudillero.
Now all eyes turn to Wednesday December 17, when the golden lights will officially be switched on from 6pm, transforming Tejeda’s charming streets into a festive wonderland. For a village already listed among The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain, this new accolade only reinforces its reputation as a place where tradition and beauty meet.
Visitors lucky enough to be on the island this week will discover more than just a pretty setting. The journey inland to Tejeda offers one of Gran Canaria’s most breathtaking drives, passing through the Valley of a Thousand Palms and the whitewashed village of Fataga before winding into the heart of the island’s rugged centre.
Tejeda’s winning video for the competition captured this unique character perfectly, focusing on daily life, local traditions, and the stunning mountain scenery that makes the village so special. The Ferrero Rocher team said the campaign aimed to highlight communities that “shine together”, celebrating connection and the joy of Christmas.
With the switch-on set for tomorrow evening, preparations are in full swing and excitement is building. The mayor admitted that the extra attention will make this week busier than usual for the small municipality. Visitors hoping for a peaceful visit might want to arrive early, as the golden lights of Tejeda are sure to attract plenty of admirers eager to share in its well-earned Christmas glow.
