ARCHIVED - Telefonica suffers cyber-attack and tells its customers to do this urgently
Spain’s biggest WiFi provider has issued a stark warning to customers after its systems were hacked a couple of weeks ago
Telefónica has begun to inform its customers that, due to a cyber-attack that it suffered a couple of weeks ago, they will have to change their WiFi passwords for both home and business use. To reassure users, the company has pointed out that no sensitive personal data that would allow the identification of the customer or their bank details have been exposed.
Spanish telecoms company Telefónica is one of the largest telephone operators and mobile network providers in the world, providing landlines, mobile services, broadband and television subscriptions.
The attack on their databases took place a couple of weeks ago, although the total number of customers who may have been affected by this problem is unknown. In order to resolve the situation, Telefónica has begun to issue letters to its customers to alert them of the attack and the process they should follow to change their WiFi router passwords.
In the letters, Telefónica has sent a message of reassurance to its customers, guaranteeing that the cyber-attack has not led to the disclosure of personal data such as name, address, ID number, call history or bank details.
If you are with Telefónica for your WiFi services in your home or businesses, you should change your password immediately.
